I agree, that the tone in the story was in a sad, and depressing mood. The family is struggling with money, and keeps secret from each other what they have in mind for the money they want from the life insurance money. I find it very immature that Walter does not want to face the fact that his wife is pregnant with another child, and just ignoring the fact that he needs to put his family first, because he believes that the gamble with the liquor store will change their lives. I believe that the mother changes the mood and tone of the story, she changes the attitude of all the characters. I believe the plant she takes care off represents the family because she nourishes the plant in the difficult time and its still flourishes, she tries the same for the family. who do you believe has the best influence on the family ? To answer your question Mr. Akkerman , I have the reason to believe that the mother of Walter has the most influence on the whole family. The mother seems to be the only person with the right mindset to make decisions out the whole family. The couple Walter and Ruth has a lot to learn they have to learn to talk about thing and Walter needs to learn that a bottle doesn’t always fix your problem. So what the mother say will more than likely go in that household. Mr. Austin, yes mama does have more knowledge and experience being the oldest in the household. Since it was her husband that passed away I also believe she has the right to the money and make the decision of what is going to happen with the money. During this time period though women and colored people did not have all the rights what they deserved and that might be a reason why Mama could not stand up against Walter being the man of the house. Do you believe that Walter is ignorant trusting willy Harris which runs away with the liquor store money?

Well in the story "Ä raisin in the Sun" the author uses some controversy between the characters in the story to make interesting. By controversy I mean makes the characters make decisions of what they want and what they need. The controversy or the arguement in the story is each adult character in the story has a dream of what they would like to do with the money they are going to get from the insurance policy from Mr. Youngers death. Even though each one of the characters had dreams they couldn't have them all, so they had to choose from what they really needed for the whole family. I think that the author made this story exciting and interesting to the readers by, using arguements and tough life decisions to show them and the readers that no matter what if you stick together as family nothing can tear you apart. The reason its interesting to the readers is that everyone can relate to them by having dreams of what they wanted but also had to make choices so they could still survive and better thier family's. Woodrow, what I understand from your response is that the characters have external conflicts among each other. One of the external conflicts you described was about the insurance money, and how it will be spend. I also found that an external conflict was between Ruth and Walter about the new child that might be coming and whether to get an abortion or not because of financial reasons. I also found some internal conflicts, did you find any internal conflicts? I think what Wood is trying to say is that, even after this family went under allot of conflict and arguing back and forth. This family stayed strong and made it through even after Walter lost all the money for the liquor store they still came together as a family. It shows that families can overcome grate odd if they stick together.

I can understand where you can get that thought. Each of the family members have different ways of seeing how the money will be spent. That was a big thing between the three of them. Walter wanted to do ridiculous things like wanting to go to the liquor store. The wife of Walter wants to get an abortion with the money. She feel that they cant go on with the child. They don’t have the funds to take care of a newborn. Also the mother want to get a better house and have something they can have that’s good in the future. Mr. Wilders, Do not listen to Mr. Austin because he got confused with the events in the story on what the characters wanted to spend the money on. Walter wanted to invest into a liquor store, and start a career so he could support his family. Ruth (the wife of Walter) did not want spend the money on a abortion she just had this in her mind because she knew the family could not afford another family member at the current financial difficulties. Mr. Austin was correct about Mama she did want a bigger and "brighter" house for the family, where the kids could grow up happily.

The characters all have different views and opinion; this gives the story an exciting edge and keeps the readers interested. I believe that Walter and Ruth idea what they want to do with the money has the correct intension and want to help out the whole family and improve their lives. Walters plan with the liquor store is not exactly thought through and he trusts a very sneaky man to handle his money for the liquor store which ends up back firing at him. Beneatha side plan is a little more self-fish and she just want to improve her own life, and follow her dreams which is great for her to travel to Africa and help people but that leaves the rest in the family in the same crappy situation. Do you think that the grandma's idea is better than Walter's and beneatha's ? Did you find any symbols in the story? One symbol I found was when Ruth told Walter to, be quiet an eat his eggs. Being quiet and eating one’s eggs represents an acceptance of the adversity that Walter and the rest of the Youngers face in life. Walter believes that Ruth, who is making his eggs, keeps him from achieving his dream, and he argues that she should be more supportive of him. The eggs she makes day after day symbolize her mechanical approach to supporting him. She provides him with nourishment, but always in the same, every day way Walter is wanting to use the money buy a liquor store and possibly help out the whole family and get them all into a better place to live. Benetha is arguing that she wants to use the money to go to med school and make something of herself and help others out. This is symbolic in the story because it shows the differences in opinions in big decisions that have to made about money. Walters plan is not very thought out and risky. Walter tries to guilt trip them into letting him use the money by saying they owe in to him for all that he has done. This shows that he feels like he is not appreciated by the family for what he does. His wife then pretty much puts him back in his place by mocking him falling to her knees and chasing him across the floor.

In the “A Raisin in the Sun Mama comes in from a long day. Walter is wanting to know where she has been. Mama ignores him and ask Ruth where Travis is. Ruth informs her while Walter is still trying to get Mamas attention. She finally acknowledges him . Walter just wanted to know where see had been all day. Mama tells walter that she had business to take care of. Once walter questions her business. Mama tesl him he should know better that to question her. Then walter gets prideful and ask his mama if she went and spent a crazy amount of the insurance money. The author uses controversy between the Mama and Walter rolls. Maybe hinting that they both know more than meets the eye. One could say that the mother is irresponsible and can’t hold on to the money that was given to her respectfully. This controversy will make an audience misconstrue the truth and make I more difficult to see the honest person in the end. I agree with you about how Mama should have held on to the money. But I think she had good intentions trying to help her family an it backfired on her big time and they pissed away the money away. They did put a down payment on a house so that helped a little but not as much as if they had the money that Walter lost. am I alone in this thinking or dose anyone else agree?

A tense moment in "A Raisin in the Sun" was during the first act when Ruth and Walter start fighting about the check that they are expecting from the life insurance company, and their overall happiness. Ruth was making breakfast for her son Travis while they were arguing. Ruth told her husband Walter to "Eat you eggs", this is a tense and symbolic moment in the story because Walter fells like he is no allowed to make any decisions and not respected throughout the household. When Walter was told to eat his eggs, Ruth was basically telling him to be quiet and that his opinion didn’t matter. At this time Walter does not know that Ruth is pregnant and she feels that he is not making the right decision. This is an internal conflict because if Walter knew that his wife was pregnant he would have a different outlook in the matter at hand.

Writing about an exciting moment in A Raisin in the Sun. the mother of Walter and himself were talking about a better life. As the two were talking the mother mentioned that Ruth, the wife of Walter, was with child. Walter had no knowledge that Ruth was pregnant. The mother stated that she wanted to get rid of the child before birth. Walter was stunned to hear that. She believe that the family could not afford another child. The Author uses a tone that tell that this family have live through hard times. The receives ten thousand dollars. The money brings the question that do they keep the child or do not. This express the tone explicitly. The family was in a weird moment then the money come in the scene and everyone is happy. The mother wanted her son to talk to his wife to make a decision on the upcoming child. Walter did not want to entertain the subject. The author also have a conflict in the story when it comes to the money. The mother wants to get a home with the movie other want to invest the money. I would like to agree with Eddie. In saying that there is conflict in the story. I think that is what makes it interesting because thats what people like too see. I think that it makes it exciting because it keeps people on the edge at all times. It grabs the reader better. Readers like conflict inside the story or internal comflict because they know what thats like in their personal lives. They can relate to that personally. I would say that conflict makes it exciting also because its keeps tension in the story between characters. In this story the author put external and internal conflict into play. The external is between all the charecters about what they want to do with the money, and the internal is conflicts that they have inside themselves like the mother being pregnant but saying anything about it. I just think conflict keeps the story good and exciting, and also it easily grabs people.

Mr. John Harrison i completely agree that Mama should have held onto the money instead of giving it to Walter to blow on his crazy idea for a liquor store. Her intentions were just as Walters were in the sense that they both had were trying to help the entire family out. In the end she should have spent all the money on the down payment for the house and then instead of over half of it getting pissed away they could have maybe been able to have something better than what they ended up with. If Walters plan would have worked with the liquor do you think he would have helped himself or the entire family?

I would like to agree with Niels about the part on the conflict in the story. The story has both external and internal conflict. I think that the story is exciting because it has some much conflict in it. All the conflict in the story keeps alot tension going on between the characters. Both forms of conflict in the story are good because it keeps the audience on the edge of thier seats at all times. The conflict acts like action does in a action movie keeps the people on the edge and excited. Just as when they argue it makes it exciting because because you want to find out what they are going to decide to do.

Well, Mr. Jones on another note how do you feel about the racial discrimination in the story. Beneatha (the daughter) wants to reconnect back to her true heritage which is African. She feels that the white people are forming the black people into the ways of the white people and loose their heritage. the racial discrimination is also found in the story when Mama puts a down payment in the Clybourne Park a white community they want to reject them out of the community and sends Mr. Lindner to persuade them to not move in just because of her race. do you feel that the racial discrimination effects the story? does this relate to the current time period?

I honestly think that Walter may have not smart enough to even worry about trusting Willy Harris because he had stars in his eyes about opening a liquor and being the main provider in his house. Walter always had issues with his family about being respected and not being able to make decisions. He saw this as an opportunity to get more respect from the family because he would be the sole provider and man of the house. Dramatic irony happens because Walter looses the money and it makes him look/feel even more like a failure to his family.

choose a tense or exciting moment in "Oedipus Rex" or "A Raisin in the Sun". what literary device or convention did the author use to develop that moment? A Raisin in the Sun is a play about a lower class African American family that is debating the use of an insurance check their father left them after his death. One of the key points revolving around this money is Walters idea to help the family by investing in a liquor store. He eventually gets six thousand five hundred dollars from the check, half of which is to be used for Beneathas education and the other half to do what he wished. Walter eventually spends all the money on the liquor store and his suspected business partner runs away with all of their money. The author of the play uses the conflict of the way the money is spent to make this an important moment. None of the family agrees with his idea of the liquor store and it ends up hurting them in the end. The author also could have used this as symbolism; the liquor store being a negative thing in a person’s life and how it can hurt everyone around you if you keep pursuing it despite being advised against it.

I believe that Walter has his own interests at heart and he wants to be successful so bad that he gets “Booty Blinded” and does not do his research before just handing his money to a shady character like Willy. He lost huge chunk of the money that could be have been used to buy a car so he could drive to work and not have to pay for ride every morning. I think he should jump off a bridge so his wife can get his insurance money because he is a loser and would be a better help to his family dead than if he were alive cheating everyone out of a better life by being stupid. Can someone help me see a usefulness for Walter in this story.
