In the “A Raisin in the Sun Mama comes in from a long day. Walter is wanting to know where she has been. Mama ignores him and ask Ruth where Travis is. Ruth informs her while Walter is still trying to get Mamas attention. She finally acknowledges him . Walter just wanted to know where see had been all day. Mama tells walter that she had business to take care of. Once walter questions her business. Mama tesl him he should know better that to question her. Then walter gets prideful and ask his mama if she went and spent a crazy amount of the insurance money. The author uses controversy between the Mama and Walter rolls. Maybe hinting that they both know more than meets the eye. One could say that the mother is irresponsible and can’t hold on to the money that was given to her respectfully. This controversy will make an audience misconstrue the truth and make I more difficult to see the honest person in the end. JUstin myrick- I agree with monroe that they do know more than what is actually put on the table and the mother is not good at holding onto money making things difficult and also making it hard to find who is the honest person

Tension first arises in a raisin in the sun when Travis asks Walter for money and Ruth immediately refuses saying “we don’t have it.” Walter, trying to be a good father and help his son be accepted at school, gives him twice the amount he asked for. He does this realizing he will have to ask Ruth for more money for his own cab fare later. This act sparks a conflict about the use of an insurance check and how it should be spent. Walter makes the suggestion of investing in a liquor store and Ruth shoots him down saying “eat ya eggs” meaning shut up. This sets the basic recurring theme (arguing about money) for the story. Yes that’s all understandable . We always want the something new in life. We can try an take the other family members part but can one live with that? Sealing it away with out them knowing. Walter, Ruth and Benetha were arguing with each other. Walter was trying to talk his younger sister out of going to med school so that he could use the money that his mom would give her for school, for him and his buddies to buy a liquor store. Then Walter drags his wife into it by saying that they have done allot for he and she owes it to them

This controversy will make an audience misconstrue the truth and make I more difficult to see the honest person in the end. I agree with Jeffery saying that conflict and controversy have a major role in making this story exciting. Since this is so i think that many people would get hooked into reading this because they would want to keep reading this to find out whats going to happen in the end. All the conflict in the story make sthe tension between all theh characters really high, which also makes the story exciting. The story also is exciting because people like stuff that they can relate to and everyone can relate to money and fighting over it. Its what makes the world go around. Thats what I think makes the story so exciting and interesting. This is what me and Akkerman was talking about . either Walter do not care to get the respect he deserve or the mother is just the top dog., I have the reason to believe that the mother of Walter has the most influence on the whole family. The mother seems to be the only person with the right mindset to make decisions out the whole family. The couple Walter and Ruth has a lot to learn they have to learn to talk about thing and Walter needs to learn that a bottle doesn’t always fix your problem. So what the mother say will more than likely go in that household

One symbol I found was when Ruth told Walter to, be quiet an eat his eggs. Being quiet and eating one’s eggs represents an acceptance of the adversity that Walter and the rest of the Youngers face in life. Walter believes that Ruth, who is making his eggs, keeps him from achieving his dream, and he argues that she should be more supportive of him. The eggs she makes day after day symbolize her mechanical approach to supporting him. She provides him with nourishment, but always in the same, every day way Connor just blew my mind off the face of the earth. I did not look the far into eggs standing for so much . I can kind of see what you are trying to say then again I get lost because I just think that she just want him to close his mouth. I just didn’t look that much unto the symbolism in the eggs.

Well, Mr. Jones on another note how do you feel about the racial discrimination in the story. Beneatha (the daughter) wants to reconnect back to her true heritage which is African. She feels that the white people are forming the black people into the ways of the white people and loose their heritage. the racial discrimination is also found in the story when Mama puts a down payment in the Clybourne Park a white community they want to reject them out of the community and sends Mr. Lindner to persuade them to not move in just because of her race. do you feel that the racial discrimination effects the story? does this relate to the current time period? Mr. Akkerman i commend you on pointing this subject out.The racial discrimination in the story has to do with the time period that it is set in. Beneatha feels like the whites are trying to make them form to their ways because she is not viewed as an equal. The whites were just plain racist back then and it had nothing to do with them wanting the blacks to form/change there ways. I think this is just a crazy idea/opinion that she has because she is upset that wants to reconnect with her heritage and it is looked upon negatively because of her race. Also the fact that they where denied residence in the community just because of there race. I don't feel like Beneatha has a clear understanding of why she feels the way she does. Why would she want to become a med student and go on to help people if she feels like the whites are making her become/form to them? Well Mr. Jones maybe Beneatha feels like if she conforms to society the whites will come to accept her more. Its very sought out by anyone in society to have the feeling of acceptance by their peers. Beneatha believes if she can help people, black or white, people would praise her and she would feel like an important member of society. Perhaps it is for wealth to help her family. If she went into the medical field she could have a chance at making money like “the whites” and be more “classy” in their eyes; and therefore be accepted by them.

The story of a Raisin in the Sun is a very intense story. There are many different literary devices that are used in the story. The story is about an African-American family who are about to receive an insurance check for $10,000 from the deceased Mr. Younger. The members in the family who are all eligible enough to use the money are all trying to decide what they should use the money for. There is a lot of conflict and irony during these decisions being made. Mrs. Younger wants to use the money to buy house. It has been a dream of hers and her deceased husband’s to buy a house big enough for the whole family and she would like to fulfill that dream. Walter Lee believes buying a liquor store solve the family’s financial issues. Walter’s wife agrees with Mrs. Younger about buying house. She would like more room for her son to play. Walter’s sister Beneatha wants to use the money to get to medical school. Between all the families’ arguments and all of their decisions there is a lot of dramatic irony and conflict.

Writing about an exciting moment in A Raisin in the Sun. the mother of Walter and himself were talking about a better life. As the two were talking the mother mentioned that Ruth, the wife of Walter, was with child. Walter had no knowledge that Ruth was pregnant. The mother stated that she wanted to get rid of the child before birth. Walter was stunned to hear that. She believe that the family could not afford another child. The Author uses a tone that tell that this family have live through hard times. The receives ten thousand dollars. The money brings the question that do they keep the child or do not. This express the tone explicitly. The family was in a weird moment then the money come in the scene and everyone is happy. The mother wanted her son to talk to his wife to make a decision on the upcoming child. Walter did not want to entertain the subject. The author also have a conflict in the story when it comes to the money. The mother wants to get a home with the movie other want to invest the money. I agree, that the tone in the story was in a sad, and depressing mood. The family is struggling with money, and keeps secret from each other what they have in mind for the money they want from the life insurance money. I find it very immature that Walter does not want to face the fact that his wife is pregnant with another child, and just ignoring the fact that he needs to put his family first, because he believes that the gamble with the liquor store will change their lives. I believe that the mother changes the mood and tone of the story, she changes the attitude of all the characters. I believe the plant she takes care off represents the family because she nourishes the plant in the difficult time and its still flourishes, she tries the same for the family. who do you believe has the best influence on the family ? I have to agree that the mother has the best influence. I see that plant also as a symbol of hope that one day through all her family's strife they will bloom into something great. I also believe that like the plant, the mother wants her family to grow by her hand and do it the right way which would explain her being the “manager” of the household and the money. Though sometimes money can blind people with false hope like walter and his liquor store. He never thought about the consequences of if the plan didnt work out. Instead his mind was on one mission and he should have thought more for the family like the mother did.

I can kind of see what you are trying to say then again I get lost because I just think that she just want him to close his mouth. I just didn’t look that much unto the symbolism in the eggs. John Harrison’s response is very good. The symbolism between eating one’s eggs and the Youngers lives is a hard example of symbolism to understand. However Mr. Harrison has made it clear what the true meaning is. Walter and Ruth’s symbolic meaning about the eggs is different toward each other. Walters is about his life’s dreams and Ruth’s is about her medical dreams.

The exciting moment in the story “A raisin in the sun” was in the first act of the story when Walter and Ruth start arguing about their happiness and the check they will be expecting from the life insurance money. During this time Ruth was making breakfast for Travis (son of Walter and Ruth) while the arguing kept going on between the two adults. Ruth told Walter “Eat your eggs” this is a symbol and a dramatic event in the story. This symbol means that Walter feels like that he is not respected in his household and is not allowed to make decisions. When his wife tells him to “eat your eggs” she tells him to be quiet and his opinion doesn’t matter in Walters’s point of view. But in contrast Ruth has an internal conflict knowing she has a child on the way and she wants to take care of her family, and has full confidence in Walter but believe he is not making the right decision at the moment for the best interest for the family. When Ruth and Walter are arguing about the money they are going to receive and how the are going to spend this money, Ruth does not believe that Walter’s ideas for the money are good ones. She finally tells him to basically shut up, by saying “Eat your eggs”. This was because she felt like she had better ideas with the money witch is true because hers where better for the family. This also made Walter feel disrespected and like he could not make a decision for his family. This shows the damage that can be caused in a family from money.

Finally the husband Walter excepts that his wife Ruth is pregnant and the money need to be spent on the family like buying a new house. This helped brighten the tone to the playwright.

Knowing that he will have to ask ruth for his cab fare later making this moment even tenser.

Like when Ruth said to Walter "Eat your eggs". this ment a lot more then just eat your eggs or even just telling him to shut up. This also symbolized to Walter that Ruth did not support his ideas for the money they where going to get, also that she did not respect him. It showed that she thinks of herself and her ideas for the family over what he believes is good for them.

In "A Raisin In The Sun" there is a tense moment between characters when they are arguing about who is going to use the money for what. Beneatha wants to use it to go to med school, Walter Lee wants to use the money to invest in a liquor store with his friends. Walter thinks that the liquor store would be a good investment and would make them money. Beneatha thinks that by going to med school she could make enough money to support her family. The author uses point of view to show to contrasting ideas in the story.

In the story A Raisin in the sun an exciting part in the story was when, Walter, Ruth and Benetha were arguing with each other. Walter was trying to talk his younger sister out of going to med school so that he could use the money that his mom would give her for school, for him and his buddies to buy a liquor store. Then Walter drags his wife into it by saying that they have done allot for he and she owes it to them. The author uses the literary device “point of view” by giving you play by play of what each person says and the context of how that said it. Example “ Walter. It ain’t that nobody expects you to get on your knees and say thank you. Beneatha. (dropping to her knees). Well I do all right? Thank you everybody and forgiver me for ever wanting to be anything at all! ( pursuing him on her knees across the floor) FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME!” This gives a first person account of the argument and the develops it by bringing it to life an gives a mental picture to the reader. The author also uses conflict to develop this excitement in the story. By having these three characters In a conflict it stirs interest in the plot and the overall story and also mixed emotions for the reader not knowing whos side to be on. Do you pick Walter and Ruth and there dream of making more money and getting out of there crappy little apartment, or do you choose Beneatha side? Who just wants to make something of herself by becoming a doctor and helping people. A symbol I found in this playwright was when Ruth told Walter to, be quiet an eat his eggs. Being quiet and eating one’s eggs represents an acceptance of the adversity that Walter and the rest of the Youngers face in life. Walter believes that his wife Ruth, who is making his eggs, keeps him from reaching his dream, and he argues that she should be more supportive of him and his decisions. The eggs she makes day after day symbolize her mechanical approach to supporting him. She provides him with food and nourishment, but always in the same way day after day.
