In the story A Raisin in the sun an exciting part in the story was when, Walter, Ruth and Benetha were arguing with each other. Walter was trying to talk his younger sister out of going to med school so that he could use the money that his mom would give her for school, for him and his buddies to buy a liquor store. Then Walter drags his wife into it by saying that they have done allot for he and she owes it to them. The author uses the literary device “point of view” by giving you play by play of what each person says and the context of how that said it. Example “ Walter. It ain’t that nobody expects you to get on your knees and say thank you. Beneatha. (dropping to her knees). Well I do all right? Thank you everybody and forgiver me for ever wanting to be anything at all! ( pursuing him on her knees across the floor) FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME!” This gives a first person account of the argument and the develops it by bringing it to life an gives a mental picture to the reader. The author also uses conflict to develop this excitement in the story. By having these three characters In a conflict it stirs interest in the plot and the overall story and also mixed emotions for the reader not knowing whos side to be on. Do you pick Walter and Ruth and there dream of making more money and getting out of there crappy little apartment, or do you choose Beneatha side? Who just wants to make something of herself by becoming a doctor and helping people. I would like to add that i think its the conflict that keeps that makes the story exciting. All the conflict in the story works against each other in the right way to make it so exciting and catching. All the argueing going on makes the readers want to keep on reading trying to figure out whats going to happen. The conflict is what most of the story consist of. It keeps the story full of mixed emotions about everything and everyone. Since the story is exciting people keep reading and they find out that they can actually relate to this story from many different prespectives.

In the “A Raisin in the Sun Mama comes in from a long day. Walter is wanting to know where she has been. Mama ignores him and ask Ruth where Travis is. Ruth informs her while Walter is still trying to get Mamas attention. She finally acknowledges him . Walter just wanted to know where see had been all day. Mama tells walter that she had business to take care of. Once walter questions her business. Mama tesl him he should know better that to question her. Then walter gets prideful and ask his mama if she went and spent a crazy amount of the insurance money. The author uses controversy between the Mama and Walter rolls. Maybe hinting that they both know more than meets the eye. One could say that the mother is irresponsible and can’t hold on to the money that was given to her respectfully. This controversy will make an audience misconstrue the truth and make I more difficult to see the honest person in the end. I agree with Jeffery saying that conflict and controversy have a major role in making this story exciting. Since this is so i think that many people would get hooked into reading this because they would want to keep reading this to find out whats going to happen in the end. All the conflict in the story make sthe tension between all theh characters really high, which also makes the story exciting. The story also is exciting because people like stuff that they can relate to and everyone can relate to money and fighting over it. Its what makes the world go around. Thats what I think makes the story so exciting and interesting.

Writing about an exciting moment in A Raisin in the Sun. the mother of Walter and himself were talking about a better life. As the two were talking the mother mentioned that Ruth, the wife of Walter, was with child. Walter had no knowledge that Ruth was pregnant. The mother stated that she wanted to get rid of the child before birth. Walter was stunned to hear that. She believe that the family could not afford another child. The Author uses a tone that tell that this family have live through hard times. The receives ten thousand dollars. The money brings the question that do they keep the child or do not. This express the tone explicitly. The family was in a weird moment then the money come in the scene and everyone is happy. The mother wanted her son to talk to his wife to make a decision on the upcoming child. Walter did not want to entertain the subject. The author also have a conflict in the story when it comes to the money. The mother wants to get a home with the movie other want to invest the money. Its true that Mama wanted to buy house with the money and I believe that she should have used all the money for her dream because it was all she got from her husbands death and since she had to be married to the man for years and wait for him to die then she should get it. Seeing how his son Walter is the worlds biggest dummy im sure he was a bigger retard and it must have been hard for her to spend all that time with him. She earned every bit of that money and should have kept it.

A tense moment in "A Raisin in the Sun" was during the first act when Ruth and Walter start fighting about the check that they are expecting from the life insurance company, and their overall happiness. Ruth was making breakfast for her son Travis while they were arguing. Ruth told her husband Walter to "Eat you eggs", this is a tense and symbolic moment in the story because Walter fells like he is no allowed to make any decisions and not respected throughout the household. When Walter was told to eat his eggs, Ruth was basically telling him to be quiet and that his opinion didn’t matter. At this time Walter does not know that Ruth is pregnant and she feels that he is not making the right decision. This is an internal conflict because if Walter knew that his wife was pregnant he would have a different outlook in the matter at hand. So what Adam is saying that there is internal and external conflict throughout the story. They make story exciting and keep readers on the edge of their seats and makes them want to keep reading. Like Adam said if Walter knew about the baby that was on the way then he might think again about what that money needs to be spent on. Thats how the conflict works against each other to make it so excitng and interesting.

Walter is wanting to use the money buy a liquor store and possibly help out the whole family and get them all into a better place to live. Benetha is arguing that she wants to use the money to go to med school and make something of herself and help others out. This is symbolic in the story because it shows the differences in opinions in big decisions that have to made about money. Walters plan is not very thought out and risky. Walter tries to guilt trip them into letting him use the money by saying they owe in to him for all that he has done. This shows that he feels like he is not appreciated by the family for what he does. His wife then pretty much puts him back in his place by mocking him falling to her knees and chasing him across the floor. Well, Mr. Jones on another note how do you feel about the racial discrimination in the story. Beneatha (the daughter) wants to reconnect back to her true heritage which is African. She feels that the white people are forming the black people into the ways of the white people and loose their heritage. the racial discrimination is also found in the story when Mama puts a down payment in the Clybourne Park a white community they want to reject them out of the community and sends Mr. Lindner to persuade them to not move in just because of her race. do you feel that the racial discrimination effects the story? does this relate to the current time period? Mr. Akkerman i commend you on pointing this subject out.The racial discrimination in the story has to do with the time period that it is set in. Beneatha feels like the whites are trying to make them form to their ways because she is not viewed as an equal. The whites were just plain racist back then and it had nothing to do with them wanting the blacks to form/change there ways. I think this is just a crazy idea/opinion that she has because she is upset that wants to reconnect with her heritage and it is looked upon negatively because of her race. Also the fact that they where denied residence in the community just because of there race. I don't feel like Beneatha has a clear understanding of why she feels the way she does. Why would she want to become a med student and go on to help people if she feels like the whites are making her become/form to them?

Tension first arises in a raisin in the sun when Travis asks Walter for money and Ruth immediately refuses saying “we don’t have it.” Walter, trying to be a good father and help his son be accepted at school, gives him twice the amount he asked for. He does this realizing he will have to ask Ruth for more money for his own cab fare later. This act sparks a conflict about the use of an insurance check and how it should be spent. Walter makes the suggestion of investing in a liquor store and Ruth shoots him down saying “eat ya eggs” meaning shut up. This sets the basic recurring theme (arguing about money) for the story.

I agree with you about how Mama should have held on to the money. But I think she had good intentions trying to help her family an it backfired on her big time and they pissed away the money away. They did put a down payment on a house so that helped a little but not as much as if they had the money that Walter lost. am I alone in this thinking or dose anyone else agree? Mr. John Harrison i completely agree that Mama should have held onto the money instead of giving it to Walter to blow on his crazy idea for a liquor store. Her intentions were just as Walters were in the sense that they both had were trying to help the entire family out. In the end she should have spent all the money on the down payment for the house and then instead of over half of it getting pissed away they could have maybe been able to have something better than what they ended up with. If Walters plan would have worked with the liquor do you think he would have helped himself or the entire family? Mr. Adam Jones I believe that Walter would have helped his family but he would have used it against them as power over them. Like he did with Beneatha in the beginning of the story arguing that he bought her stuff and put a roof over her head and she shouldn't go to med school and ask her mom for the money that she should let him have the money even if he did help her out that dose not mean he can act all high and mighty about it. it seems that he wants everyone to worship him but hes the most worthless person in the whole family!! If Beneatha would have went to med school do you think she would have helped her family when she was a doctor making big money?

choose a tense or exciting moment in "Oedipus Rex" or "A Raisin in the Sun". what literary device or convention did the author use to develop that moment? A Raisin in the Sun is a play about a lower class African American family that is debating the use of an insurance check their father left them after his death. One of the key points revolving around this money is Walters idea to help the family by investing in a liquor store. He eventually gets six thousand five hundred dollars from the check, half of which is to be used for Beneathas education and the other half to do what he wished. Walter eventually spends all the money on the liquor store and his suspected business partner runs away with all of their money. The author of the play uses the conflict of the way the money is spent to make this an important moment. None of the family agrees with his idea of the liquor store and it ends up hurting them in the end. The author also could have used this as symbolism; the liquor store being a negative thing in a person’s life and how it can hurt everyone around you if you keep pursuing it despite being advised against it. I would like to add to this that money is some symbolism from the story. It symbolizes the root of evil. I say this because it almost tears this family apart because it starts so much cinflict because they dont how to spend the money. But this causes the story to be reallu exciting and keeps people interested. Eventually in the end the family can see how they need to spend their money on the right thing that will better the family as a whole not just one person.

I wanna say that tension starts early but the whole story is basically nothing but conflicts and arguement. That what makes the story so exciting. keeps people invovled in the story. All the conflicts between characters is about they are trying to decide how a 10,000 dollar insurance check should be spent. Each character has a different dream about how they want to spend it. They finally realize in the end which dream is the best for the family as a whole not just individual characters.

That she will never make it and waste the money given to her for school. So instead of wasting that money the bother is convincing her to give the money to him for a good future owning a liquor store. The bother, trying to seal a deal to get the funds for his store. Tells his sister she owes this to him.

Discussion question 1 In the story "Ä raisin in the Sun" the author uses conflict between the characters in the story to make it catchier. The conflict in the story is the character in the story knows what they would like to do with the money they are going to get from the insurance policy from Mr. Younger’s death. The characters knew what they wanted to do but also knew they couldn't have everything they wanted, so they had to make a family decision. I think the excitement the author gave out from the story was that the family had a conflict and decisions can be rough on people but a family can still stick together. People reading this story can relate because there is always decisions that involve family and what will be the beneficial result for everybody.

To answer your question Mr. Akkerman , I have the reason to believe that the mother of Walter has the most influence on the whole family. The mother seems to be the only person with the right mindset to make decisions out the whole family. The couple Walter and Ruth has a lot to learn they have to learn to talk about thing and Walter needs to learn that a bottle doesn’t always fix your problem. So what the mother say will more than likely go in that household. Mr. Austin, yes mama does have more knowledge and experience being the oldest in the household. Since it was her husband that passed away I also believe she has the right to the money and make the decision of what is going to happen with the money. During this time period though women and colored people did not have all the rights what they deserved and that might be a reason why Mama could not stand up against Walter being the man of the house. Do you believe that Walter is ignorant trusting willy Harris which runs away with the liquor store money? Yes he was ignorant for trusting Harris with the money. Walter was the man of the house. Giving him possession of the money needed for the store. That money should stay in the possession of the "Top Dog" should we say until the plans for the liquor store are finished. Then the money should go to the contractor or what the case maybe to complete the investment.

Well in the story "Ä raisin in the Sun" the author uses some controversy between the characters in the story to make interesting. By controversy I mean makes the characters make decisions of what they want and what they need. The controversy or the arguement in the story is each adult character in the story has a dream of what they would like to do with the money they are going to get from the insurance policy from Mr. Youngers death. Even though each one of the characters had dreams they couldn't have them all, so they had to choose from what they really needed for the whole family. I think that the author made this story exciting and interesting to the readers by, using arguements and tough life decisions to show them and the readers that no matter what if you stick together as family nothing can tear you apart. The reason its interesting to the readers is that everyone can relate to them by having dreams of what they wanted but also had to make choices so they could still survive and better thier familys. The story takes us back to family values. We always want the something new in life. We can try an take the other family members part but can one live with that? Sealing it away with out them knowing. One could convince the other to give a portion of their share to make his bigger. The real quest would everyone agree to put their money together and do something that would remember and make Mr. Younger proud of his family.

Honestly Wood, nothing in this story kept me on the edge of my seat. it was pretty boring after I was done reading I thought it was a hour of my life I can never get back. Its about everyday struggle and family arguing and money. This story is just life just when you think your about to get ahead in life you get kicked in the balls and back down you go. Two steps forward one step back is pretty much the bases of this story. The struggle of a black family in the projects that's just what the world needs is another pour me story that is filled with sorry people looking to make a quick buck by taking his grandmothers money and opening a liquor store instead of working like everyone els. Lets not forget them deciding about aborting a unborn child. That's why this world is so screwed up is writers write this crap and then schools put it into books and make people read it and then people think well if in stories they think its ok to kill a unborn child and that puts it into peoples head that it might be ok. This whole story is warped and the writer needs many years of therapy!!!

In the story of A Raisin in the Sun a tense moment in the story was when Walter, the father of Travis, gives Travis fifty cents that he has been begging his mother for the better part of the morning. The moment took place when Travis was hugging and thanking his father for the money. As he thanks him his mother watches them with murderous eye while Walter stares back in defiance. That gives the reader an idea that the two parents do not share the same opinion and that money is a luxury that the family does not have. As the scene moves on the two parents continue to argue. Their argument goes from how Walter keeps his son up by staying up talking with his friends to how they should use Walters’s mother’s money. The argument ends when his sister insults him and he leaves for work. The author’s use of conflict in this scene can allow the reader to get an understanding of how stressful this family’s life is. The conflict helps give the reader ideas of what some of the future conflict might as well.
