The characters all have different views and opinion; this gives the story an exciting edge and keeps the readers interested. I believe that Walter and Ruth idea what they want to do with the money has the correct intension and want to help out the whole family and improve their lives. Walters plan with the liquor store is not exactly thought through and he trusts a very sneaky man to handle his money for the liquor store which ends up back firing at him. Beneatha side plan is a little more self-fish and she just want to improve her own life, and follow her dreams which is great for her to travel to Africa and help people but that leaves the rest in the family in the same crappy situation. Do you think that the grandma's idea is better than Walter's and beneatha's ? Did you find any symbols in the story? One symbol I found was when Ruth told Walter to, be quiet an eat his eggs. Being quiet and eating one’s eggs represents an acceptance of the adversity that Walter and the rest of the Youngers face in life. Walter believes that Ruth, who is making his eggs, keeps him from achieving his dream, and he argues that she should be more supportive of him. The eggs she makes day after day symbolize her mechanical approach to supporting him. She provides him with nourishment, but always in the same, every day way

Discussion question 1 In the story "Ä raisin in the Sun" the author uses conflict between the characters in the story to make it catchier. The conflict in the story is the character in the story knows what they would like to do with the money they are going to get from the insurance policy from Mr. Younger’s death. The characters knew what they wanted to do but also knew they couldn't have everything they wanted, so they had to make a family decision. I think the excitement the author gave out from the story was that the family had a conflict and decisions can be rough on people but a family can still stick together. People reading this story can relate because there is always decisions that involve family and what will be the beneficial result for everybody. Mr. Justin I do agree with you about people being able to relate to this story because everyone and some point in time have had a argument with a family member about not seeing eye to eye on a subject. i feel like the writer knows this and uses it to her advantage because people like reading things that they can relate to and that they can maybe see themselves doing the same things with their own family. i really feel that Mama got cheated out of he money and needed to stand up tell her good for nothing son it was her money.

I feel as though Walters idea to start a business and help the family was an excellent idea but as niels stated not very well thought out. Also I agree with niels on the side of beneathas plan being more self-centered as she never mentions anything about helping the family but is trying to better herself so it is not all bad. Each one of these ideas has a negative and positive and that is what makes it an interesting story.

In the story A Raisin in the sun an exciting part in the story was when, Walter, Ruth and Benetha were arguing with each other. Walter was trying to talk his younger sister out of going to med school so that he could use the money that his mom would give her for school, for him and his buddies to buy a liquor store. Then Walter drags his wife into it by saying that they have done allot for he and she owes it to them. The author uses the literary device “point of view” by giving you play by play of what each person says and the context of how that said it. Example “ Walter. It ain’t that nobody expects you to get on your knees and say thank you. Beneatha. (dropping to her knees). Well I do all right? Thank you everybody and forgiver me for ever wanting to be anything at all! ( pursuing him on her knees across the floor) FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME!” This gives a first person account of the argument and the develops it by bringing it to life an gives a mental picture to the reader. The author also uses conflict to develop this excitement in the story. By having these three characters In a conflict it stirs interest in the plot and the overall story and also mixed emotions for the reader not knowing whos side to be on. Do you pick Walter and Ruth and there dream of making more money and getting out of there crappy little apartment, or do you choose Beneatha side? Who just wants to make something of herself by becoming a doctor and helping people. justin myrick-I agree with big john the conflict in this story is what really makes the story. it is the big attention getter and is a big part of the plot. the family cant get everything they want so they have to decide on what is best for the family and makes it really hard for them

Writing about an exciting moment in A Raisin in the Sun. the mother of Walter and himself were talking about a better life. As the two were talking the mother mentioned that Ruth, the wife of Walter, was with child. Walter had no knowledge that Ruth was pregnant. The mother stated that she wanted to get rid of the child before birth. Walter was stunned to hear that. She believe that the family could not afford another child. The Author uses a tone that tell that this family have live through hard times. The receives ten thousand dollars. The money brings the question that do they keep the child or do not. This express the tone explicitly. The family was in a weird moment then the money come in the scene and everyone is happy. The mother wanted her son to talk to his wife to make a decision on the upcoming child. Walter did not want to entertain the subject. The author also have a conflict in the story when it comes to the money. The mother wants to get a home with the movie other want to invest the money. Eddie describes how the money the family came upon provided more conflict then solutions. It brought up the huge fights between the family and causes dissention between the members. Each member of the family had an idea of how the money would be well spent and other than mamas idea no one’s sat well with one another. It shows how money can come between any family if you let it.

I agree, that the tone in the story was in a sad, and depressing mood. The family is struggling with money, and keeps secret from each other what they have in mind for the money they want from the life insurance money. I find it very immature that Walter does not want to face the fact that his wife is pregnant with another child, and just ignoring the fact that he needs to put his family first, because he believes that the gamble with the liquor store will change their lives. I believe that the mother changes the mood and tone of the story, she changes the attitude of all the characters. I believe the plant she takes care off represents the family because she nourishes the plant in the difficult time and its still flourishes, she tries the same for the family. who do you believe has the best influence on the family ? I also agree with niels that the story does start off in a depressing mood. All the fighting between the family and the poverty they live in definitely sets the pace for a sad story. Walter refusing to accept the fact his wife is pregnant and give up his liquor store idea is very immature of him. The mood of the story however does change at the end when Walter refuses the money and they move into the house. It shows that even though bad decisions are made a family can still come together to make themselves better.

Well in the story "Ä raisin in the Sun" the author uses some controversy between the characters in the story to make interesting. By controversy I mean makes the characters make decisions of what they want and what they need. The controversy or the arguement in the story is each adult character in the story has a dream of what they would like to do with the money they are going to get from the insurance policy from Mr. Youngers death. Even though each one of the characters had dreams they couldn't have them all, so they had to choose from what they really needed for the whole family. I think that the author made this story exciting and interesting to the readers by, using arguements and tough life decisions to show them and the readers that no matter what if you stick together as family nothing can tear you apart. The reason its interesting to the readers is that everyone can relate to them by having dreams of what they wanted but also had to make choices so they could still survive and better thier familys. Woodrow explains the controversy between the characters well. He shows that each one of the characters had a different dream for the money and how they were all very different. The suspense in the play about which of the dreams are good ideas and bad ideas keeps the play interesting. He shows how people can relate to these dreams and the effects they can have on everyone.

There are many tense and exciting moments in “A Raisin in the Sun”. One of the tense moment in this literature was in act one when. Ruth and Walter were arguing while Ruth makes breakfast for the family. Arguing about what to do with the money they will be receiving the next day from insurance from the death of Mr. Young. After a while of Walter trying to tell Ruth about what he wanted to do with the money, and her rejecting his statements. She finally said to him “Eat your eggs”, this was a symbol of a tense part of the literature. This make Walter feel like he is not respected by Ruth. HE thinks that by her shutting him up like that means that to her his opinion does not matter. When really she is thinking of the family and how the money can be used to help the family. Especially since she is expecting a new born child soon.

She provides him with nourishment, but always in the same, every day way Walter is wanting to use the money buy a liquor store and possibly help out the whole family and get them all into a better place to live. Benetha is arguing that she wants to use the money to go to med school and make something of herself and help others out. This is symbolic in the story because it shows the differences in opinions in big decisions that have to made about money. Walters plan is not very thought out and risky. Walter tries to guilt trip them into letting him use the money by saying they owe in to him for all that he has done. This shows that he feels like he is not appreciated by the family for what he does. His wife then pretty much puts him back in his place by mocking him falling to her knees and chasing him across the floor. The fact that the characters in the play all have a different idea of how the money should be spent is a major part of the play. The conflict between all the characters provides the base for how the story will lay out. Some of the characters plans such as Beneathas are great in theory except they do not help out the family while others like the Mamas are completely selfless and are family focused. These different views are the whole base of the play.

A tense moment in "A Raisin in the Sun" was during the first act when Ruth and Walter start fighting about the check that they are expecting from the life insurance company, and their overall happiness. Ruth was making breakfast for her son Travis while they were arguing. Ruth told her husband Walter to "Eat you eggs", this is a tense and symbolic moment in the story because Walter fells like he is no allowed to make any decisions and not respected throughout the household. When Walter was told to eat his eggs, Ruth was basically telling him to be quiet and that his opinion didn’t matter. At this time Walter does not know that Ruth is pregnant and she feels that he is not making the right decision. This is an internal conflict because if Walter knew that his wife was pregnant he would have a different outlook in the matter at hand. The first act does hold a very important part in the story. The argument between the family members lays out the tone and mood for the rest of the play. When Walters wife tells him to eat his eggs it shows that Walter is weak and his opinions are not valued. The fact that Walter does not even know that his wife is pregnant is a good example of how not even his wife values his opinion and would rather handle her things on her own. This internal conflict between the two is a key part of the play.

I agree with you about how Mama should have held on to the money. But I think she had good intentions trying to help her family an it backfired on her big time and they pissed away the money away. They did put a down payment on a house so that helped a little but not as much as if they had the money that Walter lost. am I alone in this thinking or dose anyone else agree? Mr. John Harrison i completely agree that Mama should have held onto the money instead of giving it to Walter to blow on his crazy idea for a liquor store. Her intentions were just as Walters were in the sense that they both had were trying to help the entire family out. In the end she should have spent all the money on the down payment for the house and then instead of over half of it getting pissed away they could have maybe been able to have something better than what they ended up with. If Walters plan would have worked with the liquor do you think he would have helped himself or the entire family? I also agree with John and Adam in the fact that Mama should have taken responsibility for the money. The fact that it was her husband’s money and that she was the oldest and most responsible of the group concrete this fact. Beneatha’s school could have been paid for and a larger down payment would have been made on the house. If she had taken control the whole outcome of the story would have been different and everyone would have been better off.

I also think that the liquor store idea is a pretty good idea to invest money into because there will always be a consumer for the product that is sold there. The conflict does help stir an interest in the story by making take a side. At this point in the story however i would hope that the to ideas would find a mutual agreement to were they both could benefit from the insurance money.

Let get this out of the way first, I would rather you not used that term when talking to me. The word colored is not the correct term. That was mighty low of you to pull the race card out. With that kind of attitude will bring you down in the future. I honestly think that Walter may have not smart enough to even worry about trusting Willy Harris because he had stars in his eyes about opening a liquor and being the main provider in his house. Walter always had issues with his family about being respected and not being able to make decisions. He saw this as an opportunity to get more respect from the family because he would be the sole provider and man of the house. Dramatic irony happens because Walter looses the money and it makes him look/feel even more like a failure to his family. I agree with the fact that Walter could have been oblivious to the scheme that was being pulled by his drunken friends. He had always had a dream of being a big business man and this was an opportunity that had been laid out in front of him. As you also pointed out he was most likely eager to go into it to try to be the main provider of his household as he feels he should be.

In the “A Raisin in the Sun Mama comes in from a long day. Walter is wanting to know where she has been. Mama ignores him and ask Ruth where Travis is. Ruth informs her while Walter is still trying to get Mamas attention. She finally acknowledges him . Walter just wanted to know where see had been all day. Mama tells walter that she had business to take care of. Once walter questions her business. Mama tesl him he should know better that to question her. Then walter gets prideful and ask his mama if she went and spent a crazy amount of the insurance money. The author uses controversy between the Mama and Walter rolls. Maybe hinting that they both know more than meets the eye. One could say that the mother is irresponsible and can’t hold on to the money that was given to her respectfully. This controversy will make an audience misconstrue the truth and make I more difficult to see the honest person in the end. JUstin myrick- I agree with monroe that they do know more than what is actually put on the table and the mother is not good at holding onto money making things difficult and also making it hard to find who is the honest person
