To answer your question Mr. Akkerman , I have the reason to believe that the mother of Walter has the most influence on the whole family. The mother seems to be the only person with the right mindset to make decisions out the whole family. The couple Walter and Ruth has a lot to learn they have to learn to talk about thing and Walter needs to learn that a bottle doesn’t always fix your problem. So what the mother say will more than likely go in that household. Mr. Austin, yes mama does have more knowledge and experience being the oldest in the household. Since it was her husband that passed away I also believe she has the right to the money and make the decision of what is going to happen with the money. During this time period though women and colored people did not have all the rights what they deserved and that might be a reason why Mama could not stand up against Walter being the man of the house. Do you believe that Walter is ignorant trusting willy Harris which runs away with the liquor store money? I think the post brings up again, Walters lack of feeling dominant in the family. The mother is the older wiser one in the family but in this point in time the man in the household is supposed to be most dominant one supporting his family. Also this begins to tell how the money is stressing everyone out and starting to make them questioning each other’s ability to spend the money.

Woodrow, what I understand from your response is that the characters have external conflicts among each other. One of the external conflicts you described was about the insurance money, and how it will be spend. I also found that an external conflict was between Ruth and Walter about the new child that might be coming and whether to get an abortion or not because of financial reasons. I also found some internal conflicts, did you find any internal conflicts? I think what Wood is trying to say is that, even after this family went under allot of conflict and arguing back and forth. This family stayed strong and made it through even after Walter lost all the money for the liquor store they still came together as a family. It shows that families can overcome grate odd if they stick together. The money did cause conflict between the family, but like it was mentioned earlier it did not cause separation between the family members, even when Walter lost all the money to willy who ran off with it. The family did pull through the situation though, however I’m sure it changed feelings about how they all thought of Walter.

Eddie, you do not believe that Beneatha (The daughter) has an opinion on where the money is going? She has the big dream of using the money towards medical school to become a doctor and she wants to give back to her African heritage, and help people in Africa. Walter believes this is a waste of money and I do believe also this will not benefit the family. Do you think the setting has effect on the story? Does the time frame affect the story? Think back to the white community offering them money to not move in. I agree Neils. The daughter is being selfish and thinking only about herself and not her family. She also cares more about her African heritage than Her own relatives which is a waste of money. Have to agree with Neils and Jeff, the sister of Walter Beneath should be able to have an opinion on what is one with the money they are receiving. Walter does not believe that her idea for the money is a good idea befitting the money. she is wanting to use the family's money to go to med school while the family is in poverty and give the money she makes to help her African heritage. it could be used for his liquor store to support the family or his wife's idea of a new house.

Writing about an exciting moment in A Raisin in the Sun. the mother of Walter and himself were talking about a better life. As the two were talking the mother mentioned that Ruth, the wife of Walter, was with child. Walter had no knowledge that Ruth was pregnant. The mother stated that she wanted to get rid of the child before birth. Walter was stunned to hear that. She believe that the family could not afford another child. The Author uses a tone that tell that this family have live through hard times. The receives ten thousand dollars. The money brings the question that do they keep the child or do not. This express the tone explicitly. The family was in a weird moment then the money come in the scene and everyone is happy. The mother wanted her son to talk to his wife to make a decision on the upcoming child. Walter did not want to entertain the subject. The author also have a conflict in the story when it comes to the money. The mother wants to get a home with the movie other want to invest the money. Justin Myrick- the family could deal with the baby it would have been tough before without the money but they have a little more now so it would help things a little. also, the family would need to invest the money and build it up then they would have plenty more to go on The family probably still could have survived with out the money. even though they where about to introduce a new born baby to the world. the money will help them get on there feet and start a better life for the family and a good life for the new born. They need to get a new home but at same time need to invest money into something so they will have money to survive on later in life like Walters liquor store.

In the story A Raisin in the sun an exciting part in the story was when, Walter, Ruth and Benetha were arguing with each other. Walter was trying to talk his younger sister out of going to med school so that he could use the money that his mom would give her for school, for him and his buddies to buy a liquor store. Then Walter drags his wife into it by saying that they have done allot for he and she owes it to them. The author uses the literary device “point of view” by giving you play by play of what each person says and the context of how that said it. Example “ Walter. It ain’t that nobody expects you to get on your knees and say thank you. Beneatha. (dropping to her knees). Well I do all right? Thank you everybody and forgiver me for ever wanting to be anything at all! ( pursuing him on her knees across the floor) FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME!” This gives a first person account of the argument and the develops it by bringing it to life an gives a mental picture to the reader. The author also uses conflict to develop this excitement in the story. By having these three characters In a conflict it stirs interest in the plot and the overall story and also mixed emotions for the reader not knowing whos side to be on. Do you pick Walter and Ruth and there dream of making more money and getting out of there crappy little apartment, or do you choose Beneatha side? Who just wants to make something of herself by becoming a doctor and helping people. I think that you explained that very well Mr. John. Walter should've just let her take the money and go to medical school. If she were to become a doctor and stay with it for a while she would make more money. The owner of a liquor store can only dream about making the money that a good doctor makes. Plus people will always need health care. Liquor and beer are not a necessity. Irony would also be a good literary device that leads into this argument.

The mother should've never let Walter even think about opening up a liquor store in the first place. Much less, let him have any of the money. It was her husband that died so she should have the only opinion about the whole situation. If she had put her foot down about the whole matter from the beginning none of the stress or questioning each other would have gone on. No matter if women had rights or not she was still Walters mother.

The "exciting" moment in the story your referring to is the moment at which the tension is at its' greatest. The fact that you put that Walter did not know Ruth was pregnant shows that Walter did not talk to Ruth as much as he should have. The mama wants to buy a house with the money, which was her late husbands dream that she wanted to fulfill for him.

In "A Raisin In The Sun" there is a tense moment between characters when they are arguing about who is going to use the money for what. Beneatha wants to use it to go to med school, Walter Lee wants to use the money to invest in a liquor store with his friends. Walter thinks that the liquor store would be a good investment and would make them money. Beneatha thinks that by going to med school she could make enough money to support her family. The author uses point of view to show to contrasting ideas in the story. Yes this was a very tense moment in the playwright. This family was receiving the money from a insurance policy from Mr.Young's passing, the father of Walter and Beneatha. Everyone in the family had there own ideas for the money witch created tense times. An its sad today in money homes still today money causes stress and pain in the family. Walters idea for the money and Beneaths idea where not bad ideas but the didn’t seem the best for the family. Ruth on the other hand wanted to uxse the money to help the family like buy a new home. She had the best idea of all and this caused the moment to be tense but in the end made a happy ending.

One symbol I found was when Ruth told Walter to, be quiet an eat his eggs. Being quiet and eating one’s eggs represents an acceptance of the adversity that Walter and the rest of the Youngers face in life. Walter believes that Ruth, who is making his eggs, keeps him from achieving his dream, and he argues that she should be more supportive of him. The eggs she makes day after day symbolize her mechanical approach to supporting him. She provides him with nourishment, but always in the same, every day way Walter is wanting to use the money buy a liquor store and possibly help out the whole family and get them all into a better place to live. Benetha is arguing that she wants to use the money to go to med school and make something of herself and help others out. This is symbolic in the story because it shows the differences in opinions in big decisions that have to made about money. Walters plan is not very thought out and risky. Walter tries to guilt trip them into letting him use the money by saying they owe in to him for all that he has done. This shows that he feels like he is not appreciated by the family for what he does. His wife then pretty much puts him back in his place by mocking him falling to her knees and chasing him across the floor. Walter and Benetha are both being selfish. Opening up a liquor store might not be a bad idea but he needs to come up with a better plan. He needs a partner that's in the family in order to support the family and not go in partners with some friend that he can't trust. Benetha going to med school is a good idea but she needs to stay in the states instead of going to Africa. That would be the only way her becoming a doctor would help support the family. They should start the store, get it going good, and then save money for her to go to med school. But whatever Mama says goes

Mr. Harrison you are very correct with the literary device that he used in the scene that you wrote out right there. The mental picture this gives the reader is that Walter wants her not to go, but does not want to confront here face to face about it, he would rather go through the mama.

The exciting moment in the story “A raisin in the sun” was in the first act of the story when Walter and Ruth start arguing about their happiness and the check they will be expecting from the life insurance money. During this time Ruth was making breakfast for Travis (son of Walter and Ruth) while the arguing kept going on between the two adults. Ruth told Walter “Eat your eggs” this is a symbol and a dramatic event in the story. This symbol means that Walter feels like that he is not respected in his household and is not allowed to make decisions. When his wife tells him to “eat your eggs” she tells him to be quiet and his opinion doesn’t matter in Walters’s point of view. But in contrast Ruth has an internal conflict knowing she has a child on the way and she wants to take care of her family, and has full confidence in Walter but believe he is not making the right decision at the moment for the best interest for the family. I agree Niels I think it shows that Ruth has Walter's man hood around her neck and she rules the house hold and this frustrates Walter because instead of being a man and taking control of his house he is put in place by his wife. I think the reason the author chose to write the story in this way is because she was a womans rights activist. So she most likely ruled her house as well and felt that woman are more seperior than men. As in the story she was probably the alfa female.

But whatever Mama says goes You are correct Mr. Wills, Walter and Benetha are both being selfish, and inconsiderate for those around them. The partnership your referring to would better for the family, and business, considering all the money goes to the family, and not the other partner, whom you may not be able to trust, and you are correct with Benetha does not need to go to Africa, she needs to stay in the US, it would be easier and cheaper on the family.

I think they would've have been alright too, without the insurance money but it'll certainly help. They need a bigger place to accommodate the new born but they definitely don't need a huge place like the mother wants. The white people won't let them have one anyways. The liquor store would work for a better income if Walter had a really good business plan and a good location.

Well in the story "Ä raisin in the Sun" the author uses some controversy between the characters in the story to make interesting. By controversy I mean makes the characters make decisions of what they want and what they need. The controversy or the arguement in the story is each adult character in the story has a dream of what they would like to do with the money they are going to get from the insurance policy from Mr. Youngers death. Even though each one of the characters had dreams they couldn't have them all, so they had to choose from what they really needed for the whole family. I think that the author made this story exciting and interesting to the readers by, using arguements and tough life decisions to show them and the readers that no matter what if you stick together as family nothing can tear you apart. The reason its interesting to the readers is that everyone can relate to them by having dreams of what they wanted but also had to make choices so they could still survive and better thier familys. I agree with you wood that readers can relate with the story because it addresses real life issues. I think it also shows that "mama" rules the house hold and everyone does what she says to do. because in the end they do what she wants to do. Yet again I think that everyone can relate to having a home boss and that you have to do whatever it your home boss wants to do. Like with Walter his home boss is he wife because he is a panzy and doesn't assume his role as head of the house.
