This post is very much true. Ruth knows things that Walter doesn’t. She knows that she is with child and every decision that is made from now on will affect the upcoming moment. Yes Walter feels that he is not getting the respect he should be given. Ruth should not be hiding thing that is that big. The decision of the money technically is not hers to choose. Walter mother and Walter decisions comes before hers. It all is just a decision that will have to be sat down and be depth with. Eddie, you do not believe that Beneatha (The daughter) has an opinion on where the money is going? She has the big dream of using the money towards medical school to become a doctor and she wants to give back to her African heritage, and help people in Africa. Walter believes this is a waste of money and I do believe also this will not benefit the family. Do you think the setting has effect on the story? Does the time frame affect the story? Think back to the white community offering them money to not move in. Beneatha has the right to have an opinion but what she wants to do won't help the family at all. All she wants to do is take the money and go to Africa with it. She should go to medical school, finish and stay in America where she can make the most money to help out the family. I also agree that Ruth should not be hiding her pregnancy from Walter. I think that if she would get it out in the open, a lot of thoughts in the other family member's minds would change about what they need to do with the money.

choose a tense or exciting moment in "Oedipus Rex" or "A Raisin in the Sun". what literary device or convention did the author use to develop that moment? A Raisin in the Sun is a play about a lower class African American family that is debating the use of an insurance check their father left them after his death. One of the key points revolving around this money is Walters idea to help the family by investing in a liquor store. He eventually gets six thousand five hundred dollars from the check, half of which is to be used for Beneathas education and the other half to do what he wished. Walter eventually spends all the money on the liquor store and his suspected business partner runs away with all of their money. The author of the play uses the conflict of the way the money is spent to make this an important moment. None of the family agrees with his idea of the liquor store and it ends up hurting them in the end. The author also could have used this as symbolism; the liquor store being a negative thing in a person’s life and how it can hurt everyone around you if you keep pursuing it despite being advised against it. I think that the author also showed that you don't know who your friends are in the play. Walter was going to open up a store with his friend but his friend took the money and ran. So it shows you can't ever be too careful with those around you. Also I believe you make a good point with the liquor store. Liquor stores attract trouble no matter where they are. You always hear about liquor stores getting robbed and you have people always hanging around them. So I believe you might be on to something with the idea of showing that the store didn't happen for a reason.

Tension first arises in a raisin in the sun when Travis asks Walter for money and Ruth immediately refuses saying “we don’t have it.” Walter, trying to be a good father and help his son be accepted at school, gives him twice the amount he asked for. He does this realizing he will have to ask Ruth for more money for his own cab fare later. This act sparks a conflict about the use of an insurance check and how it should be spent. Walter makes the suggestion of investing in a liquor store and Ruth shoots him down saying “eat ya eggs” meaning shut up. This sets the basic recurring theme (arguing about money) for the story. I think this not only shows the conflict of money in the house hold but it also shows Walter is scared of his wife. He has to go behind his wife's back to give their son the money he needs because he is too scared to tell his wife no we're giving our son the money. Going back to what I said previously about the author being an Alfa Female and giving the characters in her play the same role. But I believe the main theme of the story to be money can ruin a family.

In the story A Raisin in the sun an exciting part in the story was when, Walter, Ruth and Benetha were arguing with each other. Walter was trying to talk his younger sister out of going to med school so that he could use the money that his mom would give her for school, for him and his buddies to buy a liquor store. Then Walter drags his wife into it by saying that they have done allot for he and she owes it to them. The author uses the literary device “point of view” by giving you play by play of what each person says and the context of how that said it. Example “ Walter. It ain’t that nobody expects you to get on your knees and say thank you. Beneatha. (dropping to her knees). Well I do all right? Thank you everybody and forgiver me for ever wanting to be anything at all! ( pursuing him on her knees across the floor) FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME, FORGIVE ME!” This gives a first person account of the argument and the develops it by bringing it to life an gives a mental picture to the reader. The author also uses conflict to develop this excitement in the story. By having these three characters In a conflict it stirs interest in the plot and the overall story and also mixed emotions for the reader not knowing whos side to be on. Do you pick Walter and Ruth and there dream of making more money and getting out of there crappy little apartment, or do you choose Beneatha side? Who just wants to make something of herself by becoming a doctor and helping people. The fact that Walter tried to get his younger sister to not go to med school so that he could have her money shows you what type of person Walter is. Mr. Harrison you are very correct with the literary device that he used in the scene that you wrote out right there. The mental picture this gives the reader is that Walter wants her not to go, but does not want to confront here face to face about it, he would rather go through the mama. I agree wilber that the story shows that Walter is a wimp and he is afraid of women. Not only does his wife run all over him at home but he is afraid of his little sister. Instead of saying it to her face he goes behind her back and make suggestions that she should not go to med school. But it also shows that he is not good at making decisions because he loses the money he was going to use for the store because he gave it to someone that was untrust worhty.

The point in the story that i choose, that wasn’t so to say, exciting, but rather opened you up to how the characters live and how money is really an issue in the family. This is point is made in the beginning of the story when the family is just waking up and the story is describing how they share a bathroom with their neighboring housing in the apartment complex. Already that tells you that the family doesn’t have enough money right there. Then before Travis leaves for school he informs Ruth and Walter that he needs fifty cents for school. Ruth says to Travis that we don’t have it, and Travis begins to aggravate her. Walter then gives Travis a whole dollar and then he is off to school. To me the story uses characterization to explain how the characters are. It tells you bits and pieces about each of them so that you kind of build up enough information to find out what kind of person the characters are. justin Myrick- I agree with jayme, this part kinda sets the plot and the characters for the story, it informs the audience that the family is very poor and barely has enough money to give the son 50 cents for school. Maybe Walter already had it in his head that they were going to have plenty of money after the insurance check came. Giving his son twice the money he needed made him feel good even though he knew that he wouldnt have enough money for the cab later on. I think this might be the mindset he has through the whole play. Kind of thinking that money isnt an issue anymore.

Justin Myrick- the family could deal with the baby it would have been tough before without the money but they have a little more now so it would help things a little. also, the family would need to invest the money and build it up then they would have plenty more to go on The family probably still could have survived with out the money. even though they where about to introduce a new born baby to the world. the money will help them get on there feet and start a better life for the family and a good life for the new born. They need to get a new home but at same time need to invest money into something so they will have money to survive on later in life like Walters liquor store. The only problem is how much to invest. and how much the store is worth investing into. if the family puts too much money in the store and it goes south, they are in a worse spot that they were in to begin with. if the money was invested in beneathas schooling she could make plenty of money for the family and further educate herself as well. if she educates her self in medicine she could also be the family's doctor and save money on hospital or doctor bills.

JUstin myrick- I agree with monroe that they do know more than what is actually put on the table and the mother is not good at holding onto money making things difficult and also making it hard to find who is the honest person I believe that she should have given Walter the money for the Liquor store. With that one investment, he would in return earn money on a regular basis. The fact that Ruth did that just proved to the audience that her money handling skills are not would they should be. Investments are the best profit.

“A Raisin in the Sun” has many exciting moments, but only two mean a lot. The first exciting moment is whenever the characters bring up the main idea about the money. Travis is supposed to bring fifty cents to the school, and did not. Walter gives Travis an entire dollar while Ruth is staring straight at him. Walter then wants Ruth to cut him the check so that he can invest in a liquor store, Ruth is not too excited about that idea. Ruth shoots his idea short by telling him, “Eat your eggs, they gonna be cold.” This moment is funny because it introduces the plot of the story. The main plot of the story is how the money will be used. Characters in the story do the same thing as multiple real life people, they let the thought of receiving a little extra money ruin their thought process.

One good point the story is making is that greed can take control over a person. having as much money as possible without helping another person can lead to bad Karma. She got a little taste of that karma later on. No body in the story is in the right. the problem could have been resolved just by simply splitting the money.

Not using the money wisely by going back to school wouldnt even be thinking about a family that you have to care for. If she is really head strong about protecting her family and providing the most out of what you have then she wouldve actually stuck with the school. the school path would have payed off in the end.

It was a way of life to be racist, but racism was not just between white and blacks.

investing money is actually a way of life. The more one invests the more they get payed back. the pay back can only come from being careful to not invest in money pits. money pits are the worst thing about an investment that is the only reason one person would turn their heead about an investment.

The exciting moment in the story “A raisin in the sun” was in the first act of the story when Walter and Ruth start arguing about their happiness and the check they will be expecting from the life insurance money. During this time Ruth was making breakfast for Travis (son of Walter and Ruth) while the arguing kept going on between the two adults. Ruth told Walter “Eat your eggs” this is a symbol and a dramatic event in the story. This symbol means that Walter feels like that he is not respected in his household and is not allowed to make decisions. When his wife tells him to “eat your eggs” she tells him to be quiet and his opinion doesn’t matter in Walters’s point of view. But in contrast Ruth has an internal conflict knowing she has a child on the way and she wants to take care of her family, and has full confidence in Walter but believe he is not making the right decision at the moment for the best interest for the family. Dependences on free money as of that of the insurance money could put someone in a bind. depending on money that you havent even figured something out to do with it could be the death of one persons entire career. Not having a steady job and steady investing will prove that one fact that nothing good will come.

Writing about an exciting moment in A Raisin in the Sun. the mother of Walter and himself were talking about a better life. As the two were talking the mother mentioned that Ruth, the wife of Walter, was with child. Walter had no knowledge that Ruth was pregnant. The mother stated that she wanted to get rid of the child before birth. Walter was stunned to hear that. She believe that the family could not afford another child. The Author uses a tone that tell that this family have live through hard times. The receives ten thousand dollars. The money brings the question that do they keep the child or do not. This express the tone explicitly. The family was in a weird moment then the money come in the scene and everyone is happy. The mother wanted her son to talk to his wife to make a decision on the upcoming child. Walter did not want to entertain the subject. The author also have a conflict in the story when it comes to the money. The mother wants to get a home with the movie other want to invest the money. That is a good example of how the author uses tone to help the reader understand the hardships the family has gone through as is going through. It is sad how that the mother want to get rid of the baby and on the account of not having enough money even though they still had the insurance money coming in. Her wanting to sacrifice the baby is a good way to show how her character is willing to sacrifice a great deal to help her family or how selfish she could be. People often forget about a lot of things whenever money comes into the picture. you can tell whenever people start to be overcome with greed. greed can overcome a person to a point of complete ignorance with what they have. The best thing is to have close people that love you and support you. Thats all she needed was a little motivation to go to school.
